Petersburg Deadstock I
A couple of months ago, we got a call from our friends at Ledbury who had responded to a Craigslist post about some vintage chairs in Petersburg, VA. The chairs were located in an abandoned factory, and when they went in, they found something you don’t see everyday – rolls and rolls of deadstock denim.
Naturally, we were intrigued. So we shot down to Petersburg to check it out. We found a lot of denim. None of it had been touched in a long time.
Some of the fabric was good. Most of it wasn’t. But nestled deep within the pile of fabric, we found one small roll that blew us away – denim from Cone Mills dated 1971. Many of you are familiar with Cone Mills – the last American mill making high quality selvedge denim. For those of who aren’t, our friends at RAWR Denim have a great profile on the mill.
We wanted to know more, so we did some digging, getting a lot of help from Petersburg locals along the way. While today the factory sits empty, it was at one time the home of American Textiles Unlimited (ATU), which manufactured a wide array of men’s and women’s garments, both under their own brand, and for others. Denim was a big part of their lineup. One of the brands they manufactured for was Landlubber Jeans, said to be the first manufacturers of bellbottoms back in the 60s and 70s.
We knew we needed to do something with this denim, and today, we’re excited to present a very limited run of jeans, which we’re calling Petersburg Deadstock I.
Petersburg Deadstock I is made from that one small roll of deadstock Cone Mills denim we found buried deep within the pile of fabric. The denim is a gorgeous true indigo shade, and while the denim is wide loom (non-selvedge), it still has great texture and character. We were only able to make 50 jeans from this roll, so quantities are very limited. The jeans are available in our Old Boy (slim tapered) and Big Six (classic straight) fits.
We are releasing these jeans at our second anniversary party on October 9th, 2014. Petersburg Deadstock I will only be available in-store, as a thank you to the Richmond community.
As an added thank you, we are making these jeans available for the very special price of $150. And if you buy the jeans at the party on the 9th, you can have them for $125.
